Trying to Track Down an Old Clock

Category: accessible Devices

Post 1 by Click_Clash (No Average Angel) on Tuesday, 16-Feb-2016 19:12:56

A friend of mine had one back in the early 2000's, but I'm not sure how old it was then. I think it had around 10 or 15 different alarm choices, and most of them were songs. One of the songs, and the reason I'd like to find it, was "Beautiful Dreamer, Wake unto Me".

Come on, somebody has to have owned this thing. lol

Thanks,
Becky

Do you have any other details about it? For example, male or female voice, American or British voice, what did the clock look like, that kind of thing?

I'm pretty sure I know what clock you mean, I used to have 2 of them at one point but both have died on me. I think they're still sold, but I'm not fully sure where.

It sounds familiar. I can't place it though. Was it the one that had the thermometer too?

Here you go. Confirmed under the question section that it has beautiful dreamer.
I'm slightly obsessed with shopping and hunting for things, so it was fun looking for it.

Impressive. *smile*

That's a pretty song, by the way. Recently learned it as part of my foraging around in folk traditional stuff. I didn't know it had words though.

Woohoo! Analytical people are the best. Nice sleuthing, Flidais!

Oh god no, it has a rooster! LOL Good thing it has so many other alarm options.

Seems like recently, I saw someone here mention a clock with chirping birds as an alarm. Does anyone know what that is and where to get one?

Wow! That was some fast detective work with very little details to go on. lol. Thanks Flidais!

Wow, way to go Natalie! I'm impressed!

I'm also looking for a clock, but a lot of you won't remember it, since it was before you were even born. It's an electric tabletop clock from the early 80's. It had the his and her alarms, a stopwatch and it was loud enough to wake the dead. It had a volume wheel on the right hand side that also turn the voice off, much like a transistor radio. The speaker was on the top, which was very slightly tilted back. The time button was in front of the speaker. The screen was on the front of the clock. The best way to think of it is that it was set up to look like a mouth, or at least, there were two shelves. The speaker and time button were on the top shelf, and the screen was on the front of it. Underneath the screen, there were two rows of buttons for setting the time and alarms. the setting functions did not talk. There was also a sessamy Street version of this clock as well. The alarm would start to sound, and then it would say, "Good morning," or, "Wake up, sleepyhead." The funny thing about this cloc is that if you unplugged it and plugged it back in really fast a few times, it would confuse the logic board and it would say things like, "It is 1:87 PM." It had a very deep male voice. This is all the details I can possibly think of. Anyone remember it? It's not the spardus, I'm pretty sure, since this one did not have the date.

I want one too, whatever it is. Does it have a cool, 80s era robotic voice? *grin*

It doesn't quite look like what you describe, but could it be a SpeakEasy clock, from Timex? That one said "good mmorning."

Post 14 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Thursday, 18-Feb-2016 23:31:26

I honestly have no idea of the brand or model. I only saw the one, and I fell in love with it. It was very loud, and yes, it had that sexy robotic voice of 1981 or so. LOL. That same voice was also in a talking bathroom scale. I wish I at least knew the name of the voice.

Post 15 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Friday, 19-Feb-2016 1:04:53

I just looked up the SpeakEasy timex clock, and that's not it. The voice is similar, but the clock I'm talking about had a much smoother and quicker voice. It didn't sound all disjointed like this one does.

Oh, well, it's another mystery for me, and for flidais. Get on the stick, flidais! We have a clock to locate. And then the Ebay bidding war can begin. *smile*

Post 17 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Friday, 19-Feb-2016 14:56:38

Oh yes, if I found this clock and it was in good working order, I'd pay a decent price for it. I've wanted one ever since it came out, but my friend had no idea what it was called, and neither did his mother. I used to dream that I got one from time to time.I wish I could think of other details that might help someone in locating it.

Post 18 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Friday, 19-Feb-2016 16:11:50

I loved the Spartis clock. I had a roommate at a summer camp one year who had one. I thought it was the coolest thing.

Post 19 by VioletBlue (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Friday, 19-Feb-2016 22:44:16

Aww, Anthony. I wish I could find it for you. I'm curious, too, and may do a little Googling around, tomorrow. If you locate it ever, make us some sound samples of that sexy robot guy, okay? Haha

Part of the problem is that people don't know what these things are called, by name or brand, and such, so Ebay sellers aren't specific enough, and searching listings is a challenge.

Was Spartus a battery operated clock,or one that plugged in? I'm remembering and wondering about one that was a bit chunky, and only plugged in. Its buttons were hidden under a lid in the top of the clock. Is that the one?

Also, my partner used to have what he thinks was a Sharp clock, in the mid 90s, which had a female, human sounding voice. (...Not the faintly distorted vocal sound of other clocks from that time.) I think it had a volume wheel, which was the only physical difference between it and earlier Sharp cubes, as far as I can recall--aside from the different voice, of course. does anyone know what this clock was called? Would be a nice little surprise, if I could locate one.

At the time, I nicknamed her Sheila. LOL

Funny how we get attached to these things.

Post 20 by VioletBlue (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Friday, 19-Feb-2016 22:54:40

Oh, if I didn't say, the 90s Sharp clock was a cube, and I think it had the option of 24-hour setting, as well as 12.

I prefer the robots, myself, but I'd still like to find this one.

Post 21 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Friday, 19-Feb-2016 23:01:23

Did it have a female voice with a new York accent? talking about this sharp cube. If it's the one I'm thinking of, I've got one right here on my headboard. You can hear the woman's computer monitor in the background as she records the clips.

Post 22 by VioletBlue (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Friday, 19-Feb-2016 23:46:27

I don't think so, but it has been such a long time since I heard it. I can't be sure.

This clock has some negative reviews, but it also has some positive ones too. For $16 plus $4 shipping it just might be worth the buy. The only alarm system I have is a talking watch with 4 alarms, and all it does it says the alarm time and beeps. Plus, I'm waiting for the day when it goes out. Thanks, Ms. Blue, for the idea. :p

Post 24 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Monday, 22-Feb-2016 0:17:19

I've owned this clock before. It's nice and loud and for something so cheap, the melodies are pretty decent.

Post 25 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Monday, 22-Feb-2016 15:58:07

Honestly, I don't even remember what Sparticus looked like. I know it plugged in though.
I know it played a cool alarm sound. Actually, it was the first time I'd ever heard a talking clock and it scared the shit out of me. Lol I was taking a shower at summer camp. The rooms were suites so the bathroom was between her room and mine. That thing started going off and I just about had a cow. lol Hey, it was the 80s. Don't judge me. lmao

Now, as for the Sharp cube, I never knew there was one with a female voice. The only one I ever had was the calculator. I'd give my right eye tooth for one of those again. I named mine Peter but my Vision Teacher thought that was inappropriate so I changed it to Simon. Sheeesh, I was 12 and can assure you that a "Peter" was the last thing I was thinking about. lol

Post 26 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Monday, 22-Feb-2016 17:14:36

I have one of those sharp calculators. Someone offered me 200 bucks for it, and though I could sure have used the money, I still wouldn't sell it.

Post 27 by VioletBlue (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Monday, 22-Feb-2016 17:26:47

I don't care what anyone says, Peter's a good name! But he does sound more like a Simon, I think.

re Spartus, or whatever it is... if it is that plug in clock, it has a scary alarm that increases in volume. Someone at the state school had one when I was there, too, and she went home for the weekend. Her alarm went off at about 2AM, and nobody knew how to operate the damned thing. My dark half comes out when my sleep's interrupted, and someone had to do something, so I yanked the plug out of the wall. The girl's halfwitted roommate yelled at me for it, because she was sure her roommate would blame her, and get mad at her, upon her return. LOL I didn't break the clock, I only silenced it, for the good of all! And what was she going to do, let the thing continue to torment everyone, for two days?

Well, if I locate Sheila, I figured I'd just let her announce her presence when she announces the hour. Haha Yeah, might give someone a momentary fright, but so be it.
